Cattle has been the major store of wealth for most Zimbabwean communal farmers. The livestock industry is also one of the major export contributor for the nation.
The industry might face a major set back amid the current challenges as cattle farmers across the country are battling against an unknown disease. According to victims, once the disease affects one beast, it will quickly spread to all the cattle and one can lose the whole heard in a space of two days.
Speculations are that the disease is caused by red ticks. “People are saying its caused by ticks and a number of doses have been prescribed but believe me, it didn’t work for us”, said one farmer in an interview with our team.
“The most unfortunate part is that our government is slow to react to the matter. Given the importance of the industry I strongly believe that our government should have stepped its efforts in the inquiry”, also said one disgruntled farmer.
The frightening part is that the cure to the disease is not yet known even to the Vet Dept. said one source. Early symptoms include nose bleeding, and the beast stops feeding looking downwards and in a space of two days the beast will be dead.
The disease is said to have affected most of Chikomba, Sengwe, Masasa through Chivhu area. Others are saying it has also affected Domboshava area and it is quickly spreading to all parts across the country.
