About 3 weeks ago, I went to buy some broiler chickens from one farmer in Lusaka. Upon reaching there I was met by very big broiler chickens, as usual I move with my scale and I decided to weigh them. The least among them weighed 2.2kg and the heaviest was a stunning 2.6kg (dead weight)
I was impressed by the size and of course I complimented the farmer, he boasted saying the first cropping had chickens weighing over 3kg (dead weight). Being a broiler chicken farmer myself and having never attained such weights I got curious and asked what his secret was (of course he didn’t share it).
My curiosity couldn’t let me rest and so I asked the workers how they do things, they told me they use some liquid “booster” that they buy from some Chinese guys. They give this liquid to the chicken and within a week the chickens grow exponentially (they couldn’t give me any more information)
I left that farm wondering how different from the Chinese we farmers are. In an effort to raise “big” chickens, we are compromising on the health standards and the health of the consumers. In short we are killing ourselves as a people. This is why you find people are becoming resistant to certain medications (i.e antibiotics) because they are receiving a huge dose through these funny broiler chickens. Broiler are already modified to gain weight, speeding up that process could be dangerous to the health of the consumers.
I urge farmers to uphold the moral values and produce things that are fit for human consumption. We are all learning different things but let us practice honest farming
For the consumers I would advise you pick a farmer you trust where you can get these chickens from. I, for one, am very open about how I keep my chickens and anyone that would like to see I give all the information freely.
