Zimplats, Zimbabwe’s top platinum producer is in an overdrive to boost small scale farmers through various initiatives to enhance the country’s agricultural sector.
Despite mining being it’s major domain, Zimbabwe’s top platinum producer Zimplats is investing massively to boost the skills and technical capacities of small scale farmers as a way of growing the country’s agriculture sector, another mainstay of the economy like mining.
This emerged during an awards ceremony for small scale women farmers held today at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show hosted by Agriseeds.
Zimplats CEO Mr Alex Mhembere acknowledged the tremendous efforts by farmers to produce enough for the country.
Farmers won awards, mainly farming implements and inputs including tractor drawn ploughs, knapsack sprayers, ox drawn ploughs, seeds and chemicals.
Mr Irvine Craig, executive director of Agriseeds acknowledged Zimplats efforts and thanked small scale farmers for being the bedrock of the country agricultural sector.
The biggest prize was a tractor drawn plough donated by Zimplats worth US$30 000.
The mining company is also assisting livestock farmers in order to boost the country’s herd so that Zimbabwe becomes a breadbasket of the Southern Africa region.
