Did you know that Zambia has been rated number one in the world in terms of deforestation and carbon emission????
And the government is aware, yet nothing serious is being done.
It is a known fact that deforestation has contributed to climate change and global warming world over.
276 thousand hectares is being destroyed through deforestation every year in Zambia, by cutting timber, charcoal burning, farming and fire wood.
Zambia has been experiencing adverse impacts of climate change – including an increase in frequency and severity of seasonal droughts, occasional dry spells, increased temperatures in valleys, flash floods and changes in the growing season.
Instead of blaming everything on the impact of climate change; government should be talking of some adaptation measures including:
Promotion of irrigation and efficient use of water resources
Strengthening early warning systems and preparedness, and using GIS/remote sensing in mapping of drought and flood prone areas.
We need to encourage use of electricity and NOT charcoal…… Zambia only has 25% of the population with access to electricity. This must change.
