The Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) has applauded the government’s move to introduce the auction system for marketing cotton.
ZFU Vice President, Mr Berean Mukwende said the auction system will likely see a number of merchants taking part in the purchasing of cotton, leading to the firming of prices.
He said the development will generate interest among farmers and possibly enhance production of the commodity.
“We are happy with the recent announcement by the Vice President that cotton will be sold through the auction system. This will see prices go up to viable levels,” he said.
Speaking during a tour of some cotton fields at River Ranch Farm in Mhangura, guest of honour, Mrs Precious Masango called on seed companies to be innovative and introduce high yielding cotton varieties.
“We want cotton seed breeders to come up with varieties that can yield up to 5 tonnes of cotton per hectare,” she said.
The River Ranch cotton field day was hosted by Mr Agrippa Sande.
