Cotton farmers in UMP have welcomed the new cotton producer prices announced by the government this week.
The new cotton producer prices of RTGS$1 950 per tonne announced by the government mark the return of the white gold and a goodbye to second hand clothes said some of the farmers who attended a field day at Mugabe Secondary School in Uzumba which was judged the best cotton farming school in the area.
“The new producer prices will see more and
more farmers joining cotton farming which will increase the cotton output which
in turn will result in textile companies opening and kissing goodbye to second
hand clothes,” said the excited farmers.
The Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco) agronomist
Mr Collen Nyawenze said he was impressed by the quality of cotton produced by
schools in the area.
“The quality of cotton being produced in
this area is of high quality which is what we are encouraging other institutions,”
Uzumba legislator Cde Simbaneuta Mdarikwa
who initiated the cotton programme in schools said gone are the days when
schools must rely on fees payments only.
“Gone are the days when farmers relied on
school fees only, cotton farming is one of the ways we are encouraging schools
to embark on raise funds for their projects,” he said
A total of six schools in the area are
currently into cotton farming under a programme being supported by Cottco.
