Two hundred and fifty-eight communal farmers in Chipinge West constituency are benefiting from the Mutema Banana Out Grower Scheme that was entered into with a local banana company in 2011.
The banana out grower project that has 102 male beneficiaries and 156 female farmers is one of the agriculture support initiatives that provide ready market for agricultural produce.
The communal farmers are happy that the banana project has helped to improve the standards of living in the area, but lament high electricity and water charges that they say are affecting viability.
Area agriculture extension officer Emmanuel Mutocho says the irrigation project has great potential if fully supported, with local member of parliament Cde Adam Chimwamurombe adding that there is need to re-look at possible subsidies to power and water for the scheme.
Under the banana out grower scheme, farmers pocket 35 percent of the sales with 65 percent going towards running costs.
